Why starting early matters
None of the processes that end a life early announce themselves. Fatty streaks appear in the arteries of people in their twenties. Collagen begins collecting sugar damage with the first soda. Bone mass peaks around thirty; muscle begins its slow decline around forty. Every one of them is steered by what is on the plate most days, and every one of them compounds.
That is the argument for starting now, at whatever age you are reading this. At twenty-five, the Earth Diet is a savings account with forty years of compounding ahead. At forty-five, it is the difference between a calcium score that stays at zero and one that does not. At sixty-five, it is muscle, balance, and the independence they protect. The plate is the same at every age; the emphasis shifts.
By decade
Lay the defaults
What is happening
- Peak bone mass is being set, and it is set by now.
- Arterial plaque is beginning silently; ApoB exposure is cumulative, so every low year counts twice.
- Skin's collagen is at its best, which is exactly when UV and sugar damage begins to accrue.
The emphasis
- Make the Daily Bowl, the rainbow, and fish twice a week automatic before life gets busier.
- Strength train; the muscle and bone you build now is the reserve you spend at eighty.
- SPF every day, starting today. The cheapest anti-aging decision you will ever make.
- Fix sleep before the habits that break it calcify: fixed wake time, dark room, caffeine curfew.
- One baseline lab panel, including Lp(a) once. Download your raw DNA if you have tested.
Measure and correct
What is happening
- Metabolic drift: insulin resistance, rising triglycerides and blood pressure, visceral fat, often without weight change.
- Muscle loss (sarcopenia) begins; grip strength starts to predict the decades ahead.
- For women, perimenopause shifts lipids and bone; for men, testosterone and muscle decline quietly.
The emphasis
- Fiber to 30 grams and the overnight fast; this is the decade the diabetes genes try to express themselves.
- ApoB, Lp(a), HbA1c, fasting insulin, hs-CRP, home blood pressure; a coronary calcium scan if any risk; colorectal screening at 45.
- Strength twice a week, non-negotiable; protein at every meal from fish, eggs, yogurt, and legumes.
- Know your body: this is when a polygenic profile and a preventive cardiology visit pay for themselves.
- Alcohol audited without flinching; sauna if you have access; the evening skin rebuild.
Protect the frame
What is happening
- Blood pressure and arterial stiffness rise; the brain's sensitivity to sleep, blood pressure, and hearing loss becomes measurable.
- Bone loss accelerates after menopause; falls become the thing that ends independence.
- Appetite and protein absorption decline while protein needs rise.
The emphasis
- Protein up (roughly 1.2 grams per kilogram per day from fish, eggs, dairy, legumes) and strength training as medicine; creatine has good evidence here.
- The MIND pattern for the brain: fish, leafy greens, berries, olive oil; blood pressure controlled; hearing checked.
- Calcium from yogurt, kefir, sardines, and tahini; prunes daily; vitamin D measured; impact and balance work.
- Shingles vaccine at 50; keep colorectal and other screenings current; B12 checked.
- Zone 2 for the heart, sauna for the vessels, and the social table of the Blue Zones for everything else.
Keep the engine running
What is happening
- Muscle, balance, and aerobic capacity now determine independence more than any lab value.
- Nutrient density matters more than calories; appetite is smaller, needs are not.
- Isolation and inactivity are the quiet killers of this decade.
The emphasis
- Every meal carries protein, color, and fat for absorption; the bowl, the soups, and the fish dishes are built for small, dense appetites.
- Strength and balance daily in some form; walking after meals; a sauna or warm bath in the evening.
- Sleep protected, light in the morning, alcohol minimal, hydration deliberate (thirst dulls with age).
- Cook with people, eat with people. The Blue Zones' longest-lived were never eating alone.
The first seven days
If the twenty-week plan below feels distant, start here. Seven days, one change a day, nothing to buy except groceries.
- Day 1: A full glass of water before coffee. Buy frozen berries, kefir, chia, walnuts, and cinnamon on the way home.
- Day 2: Make the Earth Bowl, even an incomplete one: kefir, chia, berries, walnuts, cinnamon.
- Day 3: Walk the produce aisle and buy five colors. Make the Five-Color Market Salad for lunch.
- Day 4: Tinned sardines on toast (R040) or a salmon fillet on a sheet pan (R037). Fish night one.
- Day 5: Replace one sweet drink with sparkling water and citrus (R090). Read one label, buy the low-sugar version once.
- Day 6: Cook a pot of beans or lentils (R026 or R025); it carries two more meals. Put kimchi or kraut in the refrigerator door.
- Day 7: Close the kitchen three hours before bed and make the room dark. Tomorrow, start week one of the stack.
The full stack: a 20-week plan
One habit a week · tick them off as they become automaticOne habit a week. When a layer feels automatic, lay the next. In five months the stack is simply how you live. Your checkmarks are saved in this browser only; nothing leaves your device.
No single layer will get you to 100. The stack might. Small, earth-sourced habits, compounded daily across decades, are the only longevity intervention every long-lived population on record has in common.
